Did you know Middle Creek Wildlife Management area is only a 20 min drive from Swiss Woods Bed and Breakfast ?

One of the star attractions North of Lititz, PA, is the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area.   And never is it more breathtakingly beautiful, than in the Fall when all the leaves are turning goldenrod and flaming red. The drive is part of the beauty of visiting this 6,000 acre area, operated by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for the protection, management and preservation of wildlife.

Last weekend my husband and I set out to “the Project” as it is often called by the locals, to soak in some of the beauty of nature. If you are staying at Swiss Woods Bed and Breakfast this is an easy 20 minute drive through some truly beautiful scenery.  As we turned off Route 322 and drove a mile or two, we entered a gorgeous wooded area that made us feel far away from any towns and highways.  The stress and tension literally started to leave our bodies as we approached the 400 acre manmade lake filled with waterfowl.  We saw mallards, wood ducks and Canada Geese as well as a large herd of deer in all their glory.  What a sight!

There are many hiking paths of all lengths, from the easy to more challenging, but on this Sunday afternoon we opted for the easy stroll out to the lake.  We parked the car in the small parking lot, zipped up our jackets against the light breeze and set off down the half mile paved path.  We ended up at a small pavilion overlooking the gorgeous lake.  As we sat at the picnic tables in the pavilion, I wished that I had packed a light snack and drink, because I always enjoy a spectacular view when I am eating!  We put a couple quarters in the viewing machines and picked out some deer grazing peacefully on the far bank.  Next time we will be sure to bring our binoculars! (Guests staying at Swiss Woods Bed and Breakfast, be sure to ask to borrow a pair of binoculars)

We struck up a conversation with a gentleman who knew all the names of the indigenous plants and it was fun learning a bit about the vegetation.  It was a wonderful afternoon and just what we needed to unwind from a stressful week.  There were other families and couples who had the same idea as us, and it was great to see them taking advantage of this beautiful place. As we were leaving we passed a group of 20 year olds, dressed up in their Sunday best, toting some large pumpkins and other props. They had chosen this beautiful setting for an engagement photo shoot!  I was going to hang around to watch this, but when my husband suggested we get going, to end our afternoon at the local Dairy Queen for a milkshake, I changed my mind and (almost) sprinted back to the car.  A perfect ending to a perfect afternoon!
